Outgoing commerce chief's swipe at businesses
2:30pm Monday 21st October 2013 in News
AN outgoing commerce chief says she has been annoyed during her three years in charge at businesses benefiting from her organisation's work without actually joining.
Annie Mulady, President of Marlow and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce, is stepping down on tonight.
Nobody has ever held the position for concurrent terms as long as her.
She said: "I think my main frustration has been businesses benefiting from what the chamber does for the town but not actually joining.
"A recent example would be us managing to reduce the time the bridge was closed which benefited the town as a whole.
"£75 per year (the annual subscription) is very little money in the scheme of things and enables us to continue to be a credible voice in the business community.
"But we are inundated with requests from businesses who want to use us as a promotional organisation without actually committing to join.
"We have an excellent mix of business types and whilst our members really appreciate the monthly business meetings, that is not only what the chamber is all about, we offer promotional opportunities through our membership and fight for what is important for businesses in the town."
Recently, the chamber has set about lobbying Government over high business rates.
Ms Mulady said it has been a huge honour to be president and to oversee the chamber growing to 100 members.
On the lighter side of her time in charge, she said: "One very fond memory I have is arriving at my local pub one night to everyone singing ‘Once, Twice, Three Times Mulady’ following the headline in the Marlow Free Press that day as I had been re-elected for a third term as president."
