THE Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire presented an award to a voluntary club in Holmer Green, which recognised the good work they do.

Sir Henry Aubrey Fletcher went to the Lantern Club to present Jack Green with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.

Mr Green was a co-founder of the club 24 years ago, which provides respite for families who look after relatives suffering with dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Current chairman, Marjory Mack, said Sir Henry took time to speak to the elderly people who attend the club.

She added: "Sir Henry is a very nice man. He made the afternoon because of his informality.

"It wasn't one of those 'stuffy afternoons.' That was good for the old people because they could join in."

About 80 people gathered included supporters and sponsors, people from Buckinghamshire County Council, Chiltern District Council and Community Impact Bucks.

The club was set up at the suggestion of psychiatric nurses who saw a need for the service in Holmer Green and the surrounding area.

The club has 30 volunteers, but said they could always do with more help. It runs every Monday between 10.30am and 2.45pm at Homer Green Village Centre in Beech Tree Road.
