RAF troops tackled deep water yesterday to reach worried Marlow residents whose road has been cut off by the floods.

Members of RAF 2 squadron and the 20 Wing RAF regiment, who are temporarily based at Bisham School while they help with the flood relief effort, took their specialist vehicles to Riverwoods Drive near Marlow Rugby Club.

Residents had reportedly become worried that a tree blown down by Saturday's storm may have further hampered access after deep flood water made the road impassable.

Flying Officer David Stevens confirmed the troops were responding to a call to look out for the welfare of at least two people on the private road.

The three military vehicles made their way through the treacherous conditions to make contact with the flood-stricken residents.

Over 200 personnel from RAF Honnington have been mobilised this week to help with the floods along stretches of the Thames Valley.

Flight Sergeant Rod George, who attended yesterday’s meeting of the various agencies involved in the flood relief effort, said the troops would be available for as long as they are needed.

He said: “We’ve been supporting the emergency services as and when required. We’ve helped with sandbags and going round checking on vulnerable and housebound residents.

“Really we are in a support role so the emergency services will always take the lead and if they can’t cope with the volume of stuff coming in then obviously we’ll help out.”

RAF personnel have also been assisting Marlow Town Council by delivering leaflets to houses with flooding advice.
