WORK on the new home for Marlow Rowing Club had to be abandoned this week as the riverside building site succumbed rising levels on the Thames.

The new £2.5m Watersports Hub has been put further behind schedule after being dogged with problems since work began last year.

And after good progress was made on the foundations, workmen could not return to work on Monday after water flooded into the site.

But committee members say the situation is not a disaster compared to the misery suffered by others living along the Thames banks over the last week.

David Plaskitt of the property committee said: "To be within just a few days of getting the ground floor slab ready for concreting it is of course frustrating that these efforts were dashed at the weekend when the rising river levels breached the defences and flooded the site.

"There is nothing which can be done now until the water levels recede. Then the contractor will be able to pump out the excavation to inspect the works for damage, hopefully none, and start cleaning up before work can recommence.

"But unlike the situation for many thousands of people whose lives and livelihoods have been wrecked by the unprecedented rains, once the rains stop we will fairly quickly be on our way again so that, at least, is something to be thankful for.

"A disappointment? Yes, obviously, but a disaster? No"

Since work began on the replacement to the fire-hit clubhouse, delays have been caused by fears over a gas main and the discovery of asbestos at the site.

And the latest setback may see the completion date slip back still further from the estimated date of September 22.

Fundraising for the new hub continues with the biggest event so far in the Marlow Rowing Club’s Fire Fund appeal taking place next month.

Tickets to the Presidents Celebrity Dinner at Crowne Plaza on March 7 are now sold out, but club bosses are still looking for businesses to donate auction prizes on the night, which will be hosted by Sir Steve Redgrave.

Businesses donating prizes will receive PR and advertising on the night, which will feature guests appearances from the world of sport.
