IMPROVEMENTS are being made at a special measures school in Bourne End, a recent Ofsted report said.

The Wye Valley School in New Road was placed under special measures in January 2013.

Since Ofsted inspectors last visited the school last year, 22 members of staff have left, with only one member of the senior leadership team remaining, whilst a new headteacher has also been appointed.

Wye Valley Headteacher, Andrea Jacobson, said: “Whilst recognising that there is still work to be done to further improve our school, it is most pleasing and very significant that Ofsted now consider The Wye Valley School to be making the necessary progress towards the removal of special measures.”

Ofsted Inspector, Christine Raeside, said: “The inspection was the third monitoring inspection since the school became subject to special measures following the inspection which took place in January 2013.”

“Having considered all the evidence I am of the opinion that at this time the school is making reasonable progress towards the removal of special measures” she added.

The inspector also said the school are now allowed to appoint newly qualified teachers again, although they must consult Ofsted on each occasion.

In this latest inspection, Ofsted were examining the achievements of pupils at the school, the quality of the teaching, plus the behaviour and safety of the pupils.

As well as this they looked at the external support given to the school and the quality of leadership and management of the school.

One of the main concerns about the school when it was placed under special measures was the quality of the teaching.

Inspector Raeside said: “Teaching is not yet consistently good because there have been so many changes in staff.”

“Nonetheless, the trend is one of overall improvement, supported by a core of good teachers who have remained with the school throughout a turbulent time” she added.
