Gun club holds open day for novice shooters

SHOTS rang out in Marlow last week as a popular gun club held an open day to introduce people to the sport.

Marlow Rifle and Pistol Club, which has a shooting range based at Court Garden Leisure Centre, welcomed 125 visitors as it opened its doors to interested novices.

Beginners were given a thorough safety briefing, instructed in how to shoot a rifle, and then each fired ten shots with a .22-calibre semi-automatic rifle, under one-to-one supervision by experienced members.

Organiser Michael Cutler said: “We had the usual mix of local residents and visitors to the town, and of young families and older people.

“I would guess that the ages of our visitors spanned about 70 years. That is one of the great things about target shooting – it is open to people with such a wide range of ages and levels of physical ability, not just the young and fit.”

The club, which is one of the longest established in England at over 100 years old, boasts a six-lane 25-yard indoor range inside the Pound Lane leisure centre.
