POLICE have cordoned off a road leading to a building site in High Wycombe after contractors discovered an "unexploded shell" this morning.

Chequers Avenue, which leads on to the new housing estate behind the Wycombe Marsh Retail Park, has been sealed off by police.

Builders working on a site in Sierra Road discovered a device, believed to be a Second World War hand grenade, shortly before 10am.

IT manager Scott Ridley sent the BFP this photo from his home.

He said: “I looked outside and the police were walking around.

"I went out to my wife’s car and the police said an unexploded object had been found.

“The officer wasn’t particularly forthcoming but he insinuated it was from World War Two."

Thames Valley Police said all site workers have been evacuated from the site while bomb disposal experts investigate.
