STEVE Baker MP visited the Wycombe Islamic Centre to break fast with Muslims taking part in Ramadan.

The Wycombe MP was joined by the Mayor of High Wycombe Cllr Khalil Ahmed and other councillors for Iftar with the Wycombe Islamic Society.

WISE gave a presentation about the centre’s work in St Mark’s Close, Ramadan and the forthcoming Eid al-Fitr celebrations. WISE will hold prayers at Wycombe Sports Centre.

The Wycombe Islamic Mission and Mosque Trust will be holding its prayers at its three mosques on either Monday or Tuesday, depending on when the crescent moon is seen and Eid falls.

The Trust will be holding two services on the day - at 8am and 9.30am. The second session at the Jubilee Road Mosque will be in English.

The festival marks the end of the 30-day holy month of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk.

Families sat down together to enjoy meals and exchange gifts. They also visit cemeteries to pray for loved ones lost.

Trust chairman Zafar Iqbal wished everyone a happy Eid.

He said: “We are laying on two sessions as we anticipate it will be very busy as all the children have finished school and what not.

“It’s the end of Ramadan, so it’s the celebration after people have been fasting and non Muslims are welcome to observe the prayers.

“There will be lots of people and children in nice new colourful clothes, which is a bit of an Islamic tradition.

“We held an Iftar party with people from the churches last week to show them what we do when we break fast, so the whole community is welcome to observe our traditions.”

Neales Taxies announced it will be closed for at least the morning of Eid.

Muslims have two Eid celebrations a year.

The second is Eid-ul-Adha, which is held over three days and marks the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
