A FUN day was held in Marlow on Saturday to celebrate the 100th birthday of a town park.

The Riley Park Trust celebrated its centenary celebrations with an afternoon of entertainment and the unveiling of a heritage trail.

The trust was founded in July 1914 by Edward Riley and his wife, Emma.

Tony Shannon, chairman of the trust, said: “The celebratory day was a wonderful success and the eight unit heritage trail now stands proudly in the park. It is worth a visit to see what it involves. “It is something that Marlow should be proud of and the heritage trail will be there for years to come for the community, particularly youth, to learn from and enjoy.”

Eight placards highlighting the historical interest in the town including Edward Riley, Marlow Town Clock, Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School, Oxford Lane Alms House (Brinkhurst) Trust, Cuthbert John Ottaway, Salvation Army Citadel, Marlow Cottage Hospital and Riley Park Trees with tree preservation orders. ¬ As well as the unveiling of the trail, there was also music from the Wycombe Steel Orchestra, a football tournament and entertainment from Jam Theatre Company.

Riley Park Trust is a green haven of tranquillity away from the hubble and bubble of the town centre. The trust is administered through a voluntary team.

Mr Methane says...

Older Marlovians will no doubt wonder why this is now called a park. I, for one, will always call this place the Rec.
