The head chef at hotel in Cadmore End was found dead in a pool of his own vomit after a day of heavy drinking, an inquest heard last week.

Amit Kumar’s body was discovered in a bedroom at The Tree Hotel in Cadmore End, Marlow Road, by one of his colleagues on Tuesday, April 26 at 13.09 pm.

The 31-year-old, who worked and lived at the hotel for five years, was said to have had a problem with drink but had “cut down” recently, Malveena Marshall, a friend of Mr Kumar, told the coroner.

The head chef at the hotel on Marlow Road had the day off work on April 25, and started drinking at 8am, the inquest heard.

Mrs Marshall - who is also the wife of hotel manager Juthin Jose - read out a statement in court saying: “Amit started drinking at 8 am that morning but I did not see him.

"When I got back [to the hotel] he just continued to drink.

"Amit was drunk, he couldn't walk, my husband had to carry him to bed."

Mr Kumar – who was said to have been drinking in a number of bars throughout the day with Mr Jose – became so drunk he was hardly able to stand up straight, Mr Jose told the inquest.

After being told several times by colleagues to go to bed, Mr Kumar continued to drink in the hotel bar, becoming visibly more drunk, the inquest heard

In a statement read out to the court, Mr Jose said: “He was swaying and talking rubbish.

“When he reached the stairs I had to push him up from behind, he pulled the hand rail off the wall.”

Mr Kumar usually shared a room but was left to sleep alone that night because he was so drunk.

After being taken up to bed by Mr Jose Mr Kumar was left on his side and was said to have been snoring, when he was checked on at 11 pm.

At 6:00 am Mrs Marshall saw Mr Kumar and said he appeared to still be drunk.

She said: “I walked to the toilet in the morning and saw Amit, he appeared to still be drunk, he then went to the toilet, I believe I was likely to be the last person to see Amit alive.”

Coroner Crispin Butler concluded that Amit Kumar died of acute alcohol poising with reports saying his “alcohol levels were toxic.”
