Plans to expand the busy Amersham multi-storey car park will be submitted to Chiltern District Council on November 4 (Friday) which could see it increase to more than 1,000 spaces.

The 680-space car park in King George V Road could have another 366 spaces added if the proposal is given the green light, after a “capacity survey” carried out by the council in June this year showed the car park was at full capacity three days a week with “demand growing”, mainly from commuters travelling into London, according to council bosses.

The proposed extension is expected to meet that increasing demand until 2036.

Bosses have also said the extension, if approved, will increase long-stay parking use at the multi-storey car park, freeing up more short-stay spaces in the Sycamore Road car park closer to the town centre, which could be a “potential boost” for businesses.

The council has confirmed the car park will stay open throughout any building works, which are expected to start in May 2017.

Cllr Mike Smith, Chiltern District Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “This represents a multi-million pound investment for Amersham and its surrounding communities.

“The existing multi-storey car park was built in 1989/90 and cost £3 million. It has served us well in the intervening years and is still in good shape – it’s just not providing the capacity to meet demand any longer.

“The space is available to extend the existing structure, and that seems to be the best option in practical and financial terms.

“We do want comments from the public and urge people to take the time to look at and consider the proposals being put forward.”

A consultation will take place after an exhibition of the proposed extension at the council offices in King George Road from Friday (October 28), 3pm to 7pm, and then during the planning process which is expected to last until February next year.

People will be asked to submit any feedback once the plans have been submitted on November 4. Before this, people can complete feedback forms available from the Chiltern District Council reception.
