Cheryl Gillan reflected on a “wonderful night” for her Conservative Party as she was named MP for Chesham and Amersham for the sixth consecutive time.

Mrs Gillan was crowned as winner after a long count, which culminated in the announcement of the results at 6.30am.

The former Wales secretary received 31,138 votes - 59.1 per cent of all votes cast - down from 60.4 per cent in 2010.

Her nearest rival, Alan Stevens, received 13.7 per cent with 7218.

“Can I also thank my fellow candidates, I know several of them were standing for the first time for a parliamentary election but I hope we’ve had a good election here and certainly we’ve had more hustings this time than we’ve ever had before.

“I hope that I’ll be able to continue my work for Chesham and Amersham, putting the interests of this constituency first.

“And I have to say on a night like this it’s been such a wonderful result for my party and I’m really pleased that I hope we are sending David Cameron back to Number 10 to be our Prime Minister.”

Earlier in the evening, Mrs Gillan said she was "proud" to have served the constiuency of Chesham and Amersham, after leaving a successful career in marketing to enter politics.

She said: “It’s been a long campaign, the Conservatives here in the Chilterns have worked really hard.

“For me, the Conservatives continue to show that the Chilterns come first for us.

“It has been my life since I was 39, and I gave up my career for it. I wanted to do put my bit back into the country

“I’m really proud to have been selected and to serve as a cabinet minister. I hope the groundwork I put down in Wales will pay dividends for the Conservatives.”
