Residents are set to be asked how they want a proposed sports pavilion to look, after the current one was deemed "not fit for purpose".

Amersham Town Council is preparing to tear down the old pavilion at Hervines Park, which has been used for more than 60 years.

The three options the council are considering are to replace the pavilion with one of a similar size and footprint; whether to include a small hall for indoor activities; or whether to build a large hall suitable for sports such as gymnastics and indoor cricket.

The council is currently in discussions with a number of architects to draw up plans for how the new facility could look.

Once they have been submitted to members, the council will then consult with residents over the various designs. This is likely to take place in the autumn.

Town clerk Janet Wheeler said: "It wasn't a good building when it was put up. It was put up in the 1950s and it hasn't really changed very much.

"It doesn't have proper disabled access. Chiltern District Council put in a disabled access ramp because it's used as a polling station, but to get to the toilet you need to go down steps.

"With the fabric of the building, we have huge energy bills. It's not fit for purpose.

"When the bowls club wanted to put an extension on it, we told them the cheaper option was to knock it down and start again."

A previous survey of residents showed three quarters of respondents wanted improved changing rooms, showers and toilets and nearly two thirds asked for new kitchen/catering facilities.

Half of people surveyed said they wanted a large hall space or function room, while 16 per cent said the new building should have a crèche.

The majority of respondents said any new building must be in keeping with its surroundings, which is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
