Leading business figures in Chiltern have signed a petition against the closure of a supermarket in Amersham.

Iceland confirmed last week that their Amersham store, located at 75 Sycamore Road, will close on December 31 2015.

Vee Bharakda, Chair of the Chiltern Chamber of Commerce, was among those to sign the document outside the store yesterday afternoon.

Chairman of Chiltern District Council Mimi Harker said: “If the store closes it will be a huge loss to the town - a lot of people in the town are very upset about it.

“We have quite a number of elderly people who live near and for them it is not only good because it is affordable, but also they can walk there.

“It is the only place you can shop in the town which is affordable.”

In a statement the supermarket said: "We are very grateful for the custom and support of the community and will continue to actively increasing our estate and look for new opportunities."

Plans to redevelop a parade of shops – including the popular supermarket – into new retail shops with flats above have been submitted to the council by Angle Property but currently there is no timescale for when the council will rule on the plans.
