Controversial development plans for a former supermarket in Amersham have divided the opinions of residents.

The Iceland store in Amersham - located at 75 Sycamore Road - closed on December 31 and could be replaced with a restaurant.

Plans for the redevelopment of the site would see the existing building replaced with two retail/restaurant units, and as many as 35 new flats above with basement parking.

The proposal by Angle Property - which includes two other retail outlets (Cargo and Chilton Watson Opticians) - were received by Chiltern District Council on December 22.

Amersham resident Peter Ogden said: “This looks like a great proposal that will enhance a grubby area of town.

“The site would be a perfect spot for a strong branded offering along the lines of a Carluccio’s, Cote, or even Brasserie Blanc.

“It will significantly enhance the area behind the current Iceland which is a dirty, downtrodden, rubbish-strewn disgrace.”

Mr Newbury of Newbury’s Greengrocers – whose store is a few hundred yards from the site - said: “I would like to see it turned into shop units.

“Iceland are missed in the town. Everyone I have spoken to has said how sad they are that it’s gone.

“We already have a good number of restaurants in the town – it would be very brave to take on another one there.”

Another resident, Holly Barrett, said: “I've worked in Amersham for the past 6 years and seen many shops come and go.

“It always seems like the same type of shops are appearing and it doesn't make the town very exciting anymore.

“It would be nice to have something different like a clothes shop. I think something like a Primark would be suited and be well visited.”

Chesham and Amersham MP Cheryl Gillan said: “Iceland has been a tremendously popular store.

“Whatever replaces it must be a store we need in the area and provide a good service for the population – it is important to keep our high street thriving.”

As of yet, there is no timescale for when the council will rule on the plans.
