Staff and children have rallied together to raise thousands of pounds in support of their school secretary who is bravely battling a brain tumour.

St George’s C.E. Infant School in Amersham were inspired to take on a ten mile charity walk through the Chilterns on September 23 to support Sarah Lawrence, the school’s secretary since 2009.

The brave woman was given the devastating news that she had a tumour nine years ago, when her youngest child was just two weeks old.

Since then, she has fought through surgery and chemotherapy to try and cure her, but in February this year, she had to go through another procedure, along with radiotherapy.

She has just started nine months of chemotherapy.

A group of 14 staff and governors walked the 10 mile route through the Chilterns dressed in grass skirts and brightly coloured leg warmers, with Mrs Lawrence's family attending to support them.

The route took just over four hours, with supporters cheering along the way.

The school, in White Lion Road, initially set a fundraising target of £500, which would be donated to The Brain Tumour Charity, but they have so far raised a staggering £2,610.

Beverley Accastello, head teacher said: “Sarah has been part of our St George’s family since 2009, firstly as a parent of two children, then as a governor, and now as our school secretary. She is one brave lady and we have come together as a team to support her and this worthy cause.”

During the afternoon back at school, more than 60 children, past, present and future took part in a one or two mile fun run, including Sarah’s children, raising £1,000.

The money raised in the fun run will be shared between The Brain Tumour Charity, which funds pioneering research to increase survival and treatment options, and the school.
