New Year starts with a bang

WYCOMBE District swimming club started the new swimming year with a bang on Saturday, winning the Coventry 50m Sprints Open Meet Top Club Award.

The Bucks outfit beat more than 20 clubs to win the title for the first time despote having one of the smallest squads at the meet with just 12 swimmers in their team.

But it was quality rather than quantity which won out as Wycombe made up for the disappointment of finishing second and third previously.

As well as landing the big prize three Wycombe swimmers won the top awards for their own age-groups.

Firstly, Cordelia Wilson won the 10/12-years girls' award with gold medals in all four strokes.

Then James Young won the boys' 10/12-years award with golds in the 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke, and a silver in the 50m freestyle.

And Alex Vine completed the hat-trick with the club's third top swimmer award winner in the boys' 17-and-over with a clean sweep of all four golds.

There were three more silver medallists. They were: Lauren Harger in the 17-and-over girls' 50m breaststroke; Andrew Allum in the 17-and-over boys' 50m backstroke; and Daniel Bennett (18) in the 17-and-over boys' 50m breaststroke.

The team also won five bronze medals. They went to: Daniel Bennett in the 17-and-over boys' 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle; Andrew Allum in the 17-and-over 50m butterfly; Lauren Harger (18) in the 17-and-over girls' 50m backstroke; and Anna Miller (15) in the girls 15/16-years 50m breaststroke.
