Swimming: Oh so close for Wycombe

WYCOMBE District Swimming Club discovered how tough life is in the Premier Division of the Speedo League South on Saturday at Brighton where just six points separated the second to fifth placed teams.

Leatherhead were the clear winners on 237 points. Then it was Brighton with 170, Kingston, Windsor and Wycombe with Crawley bringing up the rear.

The club's winners included Simon Burnett in the open 100m individual medley in a new open club record and 100m backstroke. He also helped David Bennett, Alex Vine and Michael Sturgess win the open 4x50m medley.

These were probably Simon's last league swims for the club as he takes up his scholarship at Arizona University in December.

Other wins were gained by James Crawford in the 15-and under 100m backstroke; Alex Vine in the open 100m butterfly; Anna Jemielity in the 13-years 100m backstroke in a new 13-years club record; and the 15-and-Under boys 4x50m medley team of Scott Mudge, Rupert Lee, James Crawford and James Poulter.

The third and final round takes place on Saturday, December 14.

Elsewhere, in the National Speedo League, Premier Division, Round Two at Crawley, Amersham Swimming Club finished third, despite being without Katie Towers who was training with the World Class Potential Squad.

Victoria Robinson got the club off to a flyer breaking the club record for 13/14s in the 100m individual medley in 1.10.09sec to come second.

Then with ndrea Poore, Sarah Chamberlain and Joelle Jeans they won the U15 4x50m freestyle relay.

The club then hit a bad patch before Hannah Shaw with a personal best 1.20.18sec 100m breaststroke win and Jenifer Howard with victory in the 13-and-Under backstroke picked up points which Robinson added to with a 100m freestyle win.
