Guests at the mayor of Beaconsfield’s Ball last week, helped raise more than £10,000 for a research charity which was started after the death of a teenager.

Councillor Steve Jones hosted hundreds of people from the South Buckinghamshire district on Friday evening at the Stoke Park Country Club, and helped raise about £12,000 for the Alexander Jansons Foundation, which he has supported during his second term as mayor.

The foundation was set up in 2013 following the death of the 18-year-old who lived in Beacon Hill, Penn.

Alexander, the son of Andy Jansons – the managing director of Beaconsfield-based developers Jansons Property – died suddenly last July from a heart condition called myocarditis, when he was on his way home from a night out.

Parents, Andy and Pam, and brother, Tomas, aim to raise a minimum of £80,000 a year for the next two years to fund research into the condition – having already raised £83,000 in year one.

Steve Jones said: "In a way, being mayor was sprung on me slightly, and the very first thing everyone was saying is ‘what’s your charity?’, but I had only just got out of bed.

"However, when they explained about the Alexander Jansons Foundation and its cause, I was sold on it before the conversation was complete.

"I am absolutely chuffed to be part of that process of raising money this year, I have had no regrets at all and I’m delighted we have made that sort of money for them."

Last year when Cllr Jones was appointed as mayor, he said picking the right charity and raising a lot of money was one of his main aims.

During his first tenure as the town’s mayor in 2006 to 2007 he helped raise about £17,000 for charity, but said he wanted to better that this year, with the latest fundraiser a timely boost.

The current Beaconsfield town and district councillor is due to hold his last official event as mayor at the town hall next week.

Many guests have been invited to the event, with Cllr Jones expected to announce how much money he has raised for the Alexander Jansons Foundation over the last year.
