Prize winning pupils from a Buckinghamshire school met the winner of a BBC gardening competition as they collected their award at the Chelsea Flower Show.

The youngsters from Holtspur School bumped into Sean Murray, the winner of the Great Garden Challenge, when they picked up their silver gilt award.

They were shown around the prestigious event's show garden on Thursday by Mr Murray as part of their prize - the third time the green-fingered school has won a silver gilt.

Laura Barton, the organiser of the school's gardening club who accompanied the pupils, said: "Every year there's a different theme and this time we were in the discovery area of the Great Pavilion. It was a bit more scientific this year. The children were growing in different soils, and measuring how well the plants were growing.

"It's a huge achievement for them and it occurred to them what they have done when they saw the standard of the other gardens."

The school, which enters a competition in conjunction with Miracle Gro each year to win the chance to go to the Chelsea Flower Show, has a special focus on nature as part of their weekly learning.

Mrs Barton said: "We have a 54 tree orchard, a wildlife pond and activities every week. Each week a class will have an outdoor learning day and go to the pond or into the woods and learn about nature around them."
