The search is on for an unknown man who helped a woman save a wheelchair user from falling into a busy road in Beaconsfield on Saturday, writes Will Burton.

Jeannette Buckle, a part-time author from Beaconsfield, was walking on Candlemas Lane when a man in a wheelchair lost balance on the pavement just yards away from oncoming cars.

Ms Buckle managed to prevent the man from falling from his chair and was helped by a kind passerby who stopped his car to make sure a disaster was averted.

She described the man as average height and in his thirties.

“I was walking from the new town to the old town where the pavements are quite narrow,” she said.

“A man in a wheelchair was coming down the other way and his right leg was stuck out. When he saw me coming he got quite nervous.

“He tried to move over to the right but got his leg stuck in the fence and toppled forward at which point I legged it over towards him and managed to get him back into position before he fell out. He was fine and I was fine.

“As I was doing this I heard a screech of breaks. Just as I got to the corner of the road a man who had stopped his car next to us came up to me and asked if I was alright – It was really nice that he was concerned for me.

“It would be great to try and create more of a community spirit in Beaconsfield and I think acts like this really help.”

The incident calls into question the safety of narrow pavements along main roads in the area and Ms Buckle has led the call to resolve the situation.

“Wouldn’t it be good if we could improve pavements to make them as wheelchair and pushchair friendly as possible.”
