A much-loved cafe that has served hungry commuters at Beaconsfield train station is to close for good.

Lori’s Cafe, on platform one at the train station, has fed and watered commuters on their way to work for more than a decade, but the shutters are set to descend for the last time.

The news has prompted an outpouring of support with well-wishers leaving cards, flowers and bottles of wine for Lori and Dave, who run the cafe.

Bob Massie, a regular user of the coffee shop, said: “Everyone is absolutely gutted that the cafe is closing. Dave and Lori are really lovely people and nothing is too much effort for them.

Sometimes they would see me on the platform and they would bring my tea over to me, that is just the kind of people they are.

“Everyone is really sad to see them go. There were flowers, bottles of wine and cards everywhere and Lori was very emotional. It will be a very sad day.”

While the closure has not been officially confirmed, Mr Massie said Lori is set to retire to Northampton, while Dave is believed to be heading off to work in a restaurant in Clacton.

Beaconsfield resident Sandra Royle said: “It is really sad news that they are closing. They open really early in the mornings and there are always commuters queuing up for a coffee or a bacon roll. They are always so popular and open even in the winter or foggy weather.

“I have lived in Beaconsfield for 35 years and they seem to have been there as long as I can remember. It is such a shame to hear they are closing, especially as so many people love them.”

Just last year, commuters, including Dowton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt, rallied around to save the cafe when it was given notice from Chiltern Railways saying they would have to close while refurbishment work was ongoing, with the lease open to tender after that.

A representative from Chiltern Rail confirmed that the cafe is due to close soon, but did not confirm a date.

Jennifer Payne, Customer Services Director at Chiltern Railways, said: “At the end of last year we provided notice to the coffee shop to vacate for redevelopment purposes. However, the cafe at the station has taken the decision to close before their lease has expired.

"We are working on finding a temporary solution to replace the cafe to minimise any inconvenience to our customers. Once the improvements to the station have been made, we will be undertaking a tender process for the new facilities which will offer customers both an improved cafe area and enhanced waiting room facilities."
