A Beaconsfield resident who was injured when a chandelier fell on him and his wife in a restaurant has told how the ‘terrifying’ incident has left the couple in shock.

Kenneth Hughes, 75 and his wife Jennifer, 73, had been enjoying Sunday lunch at Brasserie Blanc - one of a chain created by celebrity chef Raymond Blanc - on London End on February 7 when a large chandelier fell from the ceiling, leaving them both bruised and scattering glass across their table.

Mr Hughes, who has visited the restaurant a ‘few’ times before, had decided to return there for a special occasion, but said the incident ‘spoilt’ the afternoon and left them “absolutely in shock.”

He said: “My wife doesn’t really like going out to restaurants but I charmed her out for Sunday lunch because it was between both of our birthdays.

“All of a sudden this great big metal thing landed on us and our table. We had just finished a nice meal and then it was spoilt by that. It was terrifying.”

The falling chandelier left the couple with bruises and Mr Hughes says his wife is still shaken up, more than a week on.

He said: “My wife has bruises down her legs and arms, I got a bang on the head and have had headaches.

“Someone came over and said, how you are not dead after that landed on you, I don’t know.

“We have seen the doctor three times since and we are both taking painkillers. [My wife] is still very shaken up and doesn’t want to go out at the moment.

“Her bruising is very prolific and she was in a lot of pain after it happened.”

While initial reports from South Central Ambulance Service said that the chandelier fell on around nine or ten people, Mr Hughes said that he and his wife were the only ones treated by paramedics when they arrived at 3.47pm.

He has now praised the staff at the restaurant who acted quickly after the incident, but says they would not return to the London End branch of the chain.

He said: “The staff were very good, I could not fault them at all. They got the paramedics straight away and they really couldn’t have done more at the time.

“My wife wouldn’t go there again now, just because of the memories associated with it, but it wouldn’t put us off going to another Raymond Blanc restaurant in the future.”

Speaking to the Bucks Free Press last week, Kathryn Coury from Brasserie Blanc said: “We are thankful that nobody was seriously injured and are undertaking a thorough investigation into what might have caused the chandelier to fall.”
