A manhunt is continuing after a stranger attacked a young girl as she made her way to school in Beaconsfield just after 8am yesterday (Thursday) morning.

Detectives are not linking the shocking crime with any other investigations, but have been in contact with nearby schools over fears of the attack being repeated.

They last night issued a witness appeal in a bid to find the wanted man after a 12-year-old girl was assaulted.

She was walking along Minerva Way towards Beaconsfield town centre when she went to assist a man in woodland near to Wilton Park.

Police confirmed she was then physically attacked and left needing hospital treatment with minor injuries.

It is not yet clear exactly what happened to the girl, but investigations are ongoing while she is kept in hospital overnight for observations.

Pictures taken from the crime scene show a large police presence remains in place and forensics investigating the area.

Superintendent Yvette Hitch LPA Commander for Chiltern and South Bucks, said: "We are increasing patrols in the area in light of this worrying incident in which a girl has been assaulted.

"We are working with local schools at this time to provide support to them, and there will be reassurance patrols at schools in the area from tomorrow morning.”

The schoolgirl was wearing a black waterproof coat with a fur-lined hood, with black skirt and black tights and carrying a white patent patchwork bag with a gold logo.

The attacker has been described as a white man, 5 ft 9ins, normal build carrying slight weight, wearing all black clothing and having a bald head.

Investigating Officer, Det Insp, Jason Simpson of Force CID, said: "We are appealing for information in connection with this assault.

"If anyone has seen a man matching the description in the vicinity of Wilton Park then please do get in touch.

"We are also asking for anyone who saw a girl matching the description in Minerva Way to also come forward.

"At this stage we are not linking this investigation to any other, however we are keeping an open mind."
