Bus operator to drop 305 service through Seer Green

A BUS operator has chosen to drop the 305 bus service, just one month after taking on the contract.

There was outrage among villagers in Seer Green when Jason Tours took over the 305 route from Arriva in January.

The service, which is the only bus in the village, was severely cut, meaning passengers have to get two buses into High Wycombe.

Soham Sadhra, director of Jason Tours, said the route was not profitable and his company was losing money.

Buckinghamshire County Council subsidises the route and will now seek a new operator to take over from Jason Tours on May 10.

Phil Clarke, the chairman of Seer Green Parish Council, said: “This news probably presents an opportunity for us to work with Bucks County Council and a new operator to achieve a better service within the available budgets.”

Cllr Clarke has been in discussions with BCC about a possible hourly shuttle service between Beaconsfield and Chalfont St Peter.

Diverting the 336, which travels between High Wycombe and Watford, is also an option being considered.

There is a public meeting about the 305 at 4pm on Wednesday in the Baptist Church on Wood Pond Close. Residents will be invited to choose their preferred option for a new service.

All of the reports seem to forget one important factor : how few people used the 305 bus from Seer Green when it was running to High Wycombe.

As small communities become more affluent, dependence on public transport declines - and inevitably the time comes when a bus service is no longer economic. For those who remain dependent on public transport, access to shops, doctors and other essential services becomes so much more difficult.

But - don't be misled into believing that the clock can be turned back; an uneconomic service is never likely to become viable again. It's time to look for more creative solutions... and with several frequent bus and train services just a couple of miles away, a shuttle service to Beaconsfield could be the most sustainable solution - especially if it can be provided using volunteer drivers.
