New landlords in Downley change pub back to former name

LANDLORDS at a pub in Downley are hoping to attract more families after changing it back to its former name after a new look.

Liam Hitchings, 40, and Paul Bridges, 36 took over The Masters in Brindley Avenue about three months ago.

They gave the place a makeover and have changed it back to its former name, The Bell and Mast, to attract a new clientèle.

Mr Hitchings said: "We have turned the pub right around. We have got a function room now. We do food. We are doing quite a lot.

"We have worked really hard."

He said they have changed it back to its former name, as the villagers chose the name originally and he wants to make it part of the community.

Before this they were running a pub in Norfolk.

Mr Hitchings said: "I care about my customers and my pub. We want to get families back in the pub and people from the community."

They are serving Sunday lunches and bar snacks from Friday to Saturday.

Surely if it failed under the old name then you would want to avoid that at all costs!

This pub is not in Downley proper, more the nameless suburbs towards Downley from the Hughenden area- to call the area a village is bordering on absurd.

Well, any attempts to resurrect the community atmosphere in local pubs gets a thumbs up from me.
Some posters can't help being negative, they will always find something to snipe about.
Well done and let's hope they can save another pub from being turned into flats.

If you haven't been to the Bell & Mast for a while, it is unfair to make comments from afar. The pub looks better than it has done for years and is well worth a visit to see for your self. I hope Liam and Paul continue to change what was once a great pub, back to it's former glories
