A new hedge has been put up in a Chesham park in a bid to deter problem geese from landing there.

Lowndes Park in the town centre has suffered from vast numbers of Canada Geese flocking there every year - leaving large amounts of faeces and even on occasions attacking visitors.

Members of the town council who have got into a flap over the nuisance they cause have planted a new hedge along Skottowe's Pond to try and stop them from landing.

The theory is the geese won't land on the pond if their view of it is obscured by the hedge.

The council believe the solution will cause the least amount of disruption to the park, with bird scarers which emit loud bangs being another suggestion for controlling the goose population to have been previously put forward.

However members of the Friends of Lowndes Park are hedging their bets over whether it will be a success or not.

The group's most recent newsletter said: "There is much evidence that if the smooth flight path from air to water can be intercepted the geese will search out alternative water bodies with easier access.

"However there is just as much evidence that the geese ignore the obstruction. It is a question of watch this space to see who will prevail."
