An 87-year-old man from Amersham who died after falling from his bicycle on a busy road in Chesham Bois last week has been named locally as Alan Welch.

The cyclist was pronounced dead on Monday evening after being found with serious head injuries on the A416 Amersham Road.

Mr Welch was a science teacher who, upon retirement, worked for over 25 years to provide science equipment to the developing world.

He founded the charity Lab Aid – based in Chiltern Road, Amersham – back in 1990 and was awarded with an MBE for his charity work back in 2001.

Mr Welch was also an active member of the St. John’s Methodist Church. He leaves behind two sons and a daughter in law.

In a statement the church said: “With great sadness we learnt that Alan died in an accident whilst cycling home on last Monday evening at around 5.00pm.

“Alan was one of St. John’s longest, loyal and most active members.”

Police believe Mr Welch, who was found about ten metres north of the junction with North Road, had fallen from his bike.

Paramedics took him to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
