The Chairman of Chiltern District Council was at a swimming pool in Chesham last week as she aims to conquer her "morbid fear" of water for charity.
Cllr Mimi Harker is raising money for Sport Relief this year by learning to swim at Chesham Leisure Centre on White Hill.
Cllr Harker was back in the pool for the first time in three weeks after recovering from an illness.
She said: "It has been quite a journey because I am a bit of a scaredy cat.
"Water to some people isn't a big deal but to me it is - I feel sick just looking at it and I feel like I can't breath."
"But I have got so many people supporting me and everyone has been so fantastic - I can't let them down now.
"I never want to forget what I have learnt so far. Wendy is the most amazing teacher."
Mrs Harker hopes to raise £1,000 from the event and says she is currently about half way towards her target.
The sponsored swim challenge takes place at Chesham Leisure Centre on February 25 at 11am.
