Chesham and Amersham MP Cheryl Gillan has begged the capital’s transport authority not to ignore her constituents when making important decisions.

In an open letter to the newly-elected London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, the former Welsh secretary reiterated that – despite not being a London borough – issues in the capital heavily affect commuters in Chesham and Amersham.

The Conservative MPs “check list” of issues includes asking the Mayor to help install disabled access at Amersham station, a project which she has been supporting for many years.

Cheryl Gillan MP said: “Constituents pay to use Transport for London services, but they say that their views are not often considered.

“Chesham and Amersham are at the end of the Metropolitan Line with many constituents commuting in and out of London and using other transport services regularly.

“I hope Sadiq Khan will ensure that all TfL matters are communicated to us in Buckinghamshire as we can be specially and directly affected by changes and decisions.

“The completion of the work on the lift at Amersham would be a popular improvement to this busy station and I hope this gap in public service may be one that he places high on his list of priorities.”

Chris Emery, chairman of Chesham & District Transport Users’ Group, said: “A couple of years ago they started building lifts in Amersham station, but then they stopped, so at the moment you still have to climb up and down some steep steps.

“Because of this I have spoken to some people who choose to go to Chesham or Chalfont instead and get taxis home.

“We are asking them to continue the building work, it is crucial for the town.”

However, it appears it is not just the lack of step-free access at Amersham which is hampering Chiltern commuters.

Richard Freeston-Clough, Communications Officer at London Travel Watch, said: “Passengers are unable to get railcard discounts on tickets when travelling from Chesham and Amersham as TfL ticket machines do not have the same capabilities as National Rail machines and the London Underground ticket offices have closed.

“This improvement, along with step free access at Amersham, would benefit all users not just those with disabilities.”

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: “The Mayor is committed to providing a modern, affordable and accessible transport network.

“He is aware of the concerns of those using Chesham and Amersham stations and looks forward to discussing these issues with Cheryl Gillan.”
