Chesham and Amersham MP Cheryl Gillan has praised voters for supporting a "future for the UK outside the European Union."

Mrs Gillan, who campaigned for the Leave vote before the EU referendum despite her constituency voting to Remain, said it was "democracy in action."

She said: "In voting Leave, the electorate have given an instruction to the Government that they must negotiate a new relationship with our European neighbours and return power to our own Parliaments and Assemblies.

"The decision was not for politicians but for the people and it was right for the government to give people this choice as so many individuals felt in their hearts that our democracy had lessened over the past decades, affecting all aspects of our daily lives, as well as the right to self-determination."

The politician says the country now needs to "continue to build a successful nation" by growing our "global markets, maximising on our enterprise and innovation and remaining a powerful friend to Europe but now one that can be self-determining and independent."
