UPDATE: Murder probe - man bailed after 'inconclusive' post mortem on OAP

Neighbours have described their shock after a pensioner - who has now been named locally - was found dead at a house in Chesham yesterday.

Detectives were called to an address in Stoney Grove, Chesham, at 11.27am on Thursday (September 29).

Once inside the property officers discovered the body of a woman in her sixties, sparking a murder investigation.

The woman has been named by neighbours as Linda Harding.

Next door neighbour, Susan Cook, has now paid tribute to Ms Harding, who is believed to be aged 68 with two sons.

She said: "I knew Linda well, we have lived here since the end of 2005 and she must have been here five years or more before that.

"She was a nice lady. She walked with a stick and she found it hard to get about. She didn’t drive and used to get taxis, the taxi drivers all knew her.

"When I had my accident one of the taxi drivers told her I had a broken wrist and the next minute she was at my door with flowers. She was a really kind person."

Describing the moment emergency services arrived at the scene yesterday, Ms Cook added: "I happened to look out the kitchen window at about 12pm and saw a police car and then I was outside talking to the postman when I saw him go next door.

"I thought what's happened there? Next thing the ambulances were here – a big one and two small ones – and about three or four police cars, so I thought wow this must be serious.

"I'm really shocked, this is a quiet place round here and things like that don’t happen. We know most people around here. You never think it will happen on your own doorstep. It is awful."

The body was found in Stoney Grove, Chesham.

Although the woman is yet to be formally identified at this time her next of kin has been informed of her death, police have confirmed.

A post mortem is due to take place today (Friday).

A 41-year-old man from Chesham has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody.

Senior Investigating officer, Det Ch Insp Mark Glover said: "I would like to reassure the local community that this is an isolated incident and that we are conducting a meticulous investigation to establish the cause of death.

"Our thoughts are with the family of the woman at this extremely difficult time.

"Local residents might see an increased police presence in the area while we conduct our enquiries and there will also be a scene watch at the address while the investigation there continues."
