MP to hear residents concerns over hospital changes

A MEETING has been organised to discuss public fears over the movement of accident and emergency services from Wycombe to Stoke Mandeville hospital.

The public forum, which is being set up by Marlow People's Action Group (PAG), will be attended by the Conservative MP for Wycombe Paul Goodman and Richard Mills from the Bucks Primary Care Trust.

It will be held on May 2 at Court Gardens in Pound Lane, Marlow.

Terry Price, vice chairman of the Marlow PAG, said that he was angry that for some accident and emergency services, people were being forced to travel away from Wycombe.

Mr Price, from York Road, Marlow, said: "People are absolutely livid about what is going on.

"Why should you have a down-graded service in what is the biggest population area in Buckinghamshire?

"People in the town are so bloody incensed by this."

Currently, accident and emergency services are split between Wycombe General Hospital and Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

If a patient requires immediate surgery, such as for trauma from a car crash, they will be taken to Stoke Mandeville.

Life threatening conditions that do not require surgery, such as a stroke or a heart attack, will be dealt with at Wycombe.

Likewise, minor injuries can be dealt with at Wycombe, as they will not need an operation.

Christine Stammers, chairwoman of the Bucks 50 Plus Forum, said that it was an opportunity for debate, and hoped that it didn't turn into an argument: "There is a national imperative to centralise services. We understand that this is necessary, but many people don't have cars and travel can be a bit of a nightmare."

However, Mr Price said that he did not agree that services needed to move to Stoke Mandeville.

He said: "I do not accept this political climate. By speaking out we are starting to make the authorities modify their position."

the move of A&E has to be the stupidest idea for a long time.
if when i was taken ill i had to be taken to joke mandeville i would be dead. simple as......
and no... that wasnt a typo, i find that so called hospital a joke... a mere shadow of what it used to be.
that said wycombe general is fast going that way.
what i want to know, is who can we expect people to travel over 15 miles, down a less than smooth road, and survive if they are suffering major trauma?
in my experience the fastest wycombe to stoke mandeville trip is around 20 minutes.. its hardly a road you can do more than 50mph on when its quiet.
make this move and people WILL DIE!
we need MORE local hospitals NOT LESS!

quote

"Immediate" surgery, surely the clue is in the the word "immediate".
If I was involved in a car crash, or similar, and needed "immediate" surgery I'd be a little bit upset if I had to take a half hour journey, traffic permitting, to a hospital 15 miles away.
But, if I had a stroke or a heart attack I'd be taken to High Wycombe hospital, just around the corner, well, that's alright then, I'd better not get involved in any car accidents.

One of the bigges concerns for me is that the roads between the 2 hospitals are not good and a 17 mile journey can take over half an hour which in a life threatening situation is time lost never to be recovered.
Also we have a university and loads of schools around the hospital. Heaven forbid if a major incident happened at any of those.
The trouble is the Trust is thinking long term strategy and of all the new build going on in Aylesbury.
That may be so but South Bucks is more densely populatd NOW.

Insist on Wexham Park, it's closer & cleaner.

That's from the town centre, even farther from the marsh or loudwater

we are constantly being told that trauma patients have to be taken to Stoke for treatment. In a majority of cases car accident victims are taken to Wexham as its closer.Wexham is not part of our trust and will then invoice us for patient care. also if hte ambulance journey takes longer then the amount of time the ambulance crew take to clear and beback on the road is also raised. will they employ more ambulance personnel to fill the time gap?

It's about time our local politicians stopped the rot and insisted Wycombe A&E upgraded not the other way around!

maybe we need to start a petition to try and keep wycombe general as a real hospital?
Posted by: smokey, high wycombe on 12:04pm Mon 24 Mar 08
its ironic
we get a new shoppng centre that will ecourage people to come to the town.
we have a college that now has university status and is planning on doing lots of building work.
And what do the powers that be do?
Move the A/E further away.

hear hear, most truthful quote of the year, sadly we aren't the ones with the power who seem to have little care for anything other than balancing the books

Don't waste your energy, Wycombe council will do what they want with no regard for the local people. We helped campain to keep Terriers first school open, then Wellesbourne School. What a waste of time - no-one cared what happened to the children who were shifted from pillar to post, ruining thier education. Later on we helped to protest against the changes at WGH. Same thing - a waste of time. I was born in Wycombe and I'm proud of my roots but I wouldn't move back if you paid me. Shame eh?

sadly you are right.
Its a bit like the Tescos debacle at Gerrards cross. No one wanted it there, the railway tunnel that was built collpased and yet it is still coming. I really do not think that we live in a true democracy any more. WH is not as big as SM -in terms of land. Prvious bosses have sold off so much that usd to belong to WH - i.e the Booker site. There is just no money. And the hospital itslef - well the tower block - is falling to pieces - literally.

Shame really they couldn't have injected a few million into our hospital. I have some gripes about the place, such as the parking fiasco, seeing my Nan shipped off to Stoke Mandeville for the weekend as there were "no staff" to care for her, yet no one else on her ward got moved. However, I cannot see how moving A&E to Aylesbury is going to help us. When you are ill or have an accident and need treatment, should you really have to wait for an ambulance (in some cases) to have to come FROM Aylesbury to get you then take you all the way back there? (I say in SOME cases as we do have an ambulance dispatch place in Wycombe). Also, there was talk of them closing the maternity ward, is that still happening? If so, what exactly is our hospital for these days?

Talking about marernity.....
we have 3 babies two were delivered in wycombe and they (the midwifes THANKS a million to them) were really helpful and made us feel like they cared.
... BUT SMH maternity I HATED the place it was spookey and cold NOONE really cared.
I wont go into detail but when complications strted the midwives and doctor vanished (other mums have said similar).
money should be injected into WGH.
WDC GET OFF YOUR FAT BACKSIDES AND DO SOME PROPER WORK.... LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE OF WYCOMBE.
WE KNOW, WDC DON'T.
