Bottled message breakthrough for students
A MESSAGE in a bottle has helped two students trying to break into the advertising industry.
The two third year advertising students from Bucks New University took part in a competition to win a prestigious two week work placement by coming up with the most creative CV.
Winners Adam Burch, 21, and Jamie Evans, 23, came up with the idea of writing their resumes on a medicine bottle, which contained a note directing the company towards their website - ideas unit - which provides examples of their work.
Their prize is a two week stint shadowing experts at London agency Partners Andrew Aldridge.
The friends work as typical advertising industry employees - Mr Evans as copywriter and Mr Burch as art director.
Mr Burch said: "The idea of the site was that we believed that brands, just like humans, get sick from time to time, and need some treatment to help them rediscover who they are.

"The medicine bottle idea came out of the same kind of thinking and it was a good way to tell them about our website. We knew it would make a bit of a statement and hoped that it would raise a smile if not win us the placements."
Judge Paul Snoxell said: "I thought the standard of all the entries was delightfully high. Adam and Jamie's CV came out tops on three counts. Their self-branding was clear, simple and memorable, their execution was excellent, from the tone of the copy to the charm of the wonky illustrations. And lastly they used direct media adroitly, taking me from the physical world to a smart little website."
Mr Burch said: "We were over the moon, a bit shocked to be honest. We had been working on it for months, working really long hours to get it done. The standards were very high so we are really proud."
The advertising and creative industry is notoriously difficult to break into and the number of graduates applying for positions far outweighs the numbers available. The students are now in the final phase of their course with just six weeks before they finish.
Mr Evans said: "We have got four placements lined up after we finish. We have to keep impressing on placements and just keep going with it, but hopefully this will help us get where we're aiming."
