A journey to safer roads is soon to start for drivers in two south Buckinghamshire villages, as campaigners hope to implement moveable road signs alerting people when they are going over the speed limit.

Residents in Flackwell Heath and Loudwater have been raising funds to buy two moveable vehicle activated signs (MVAS) to permanently keep in each village and plan to fit the devices in the next week.

Supported by Chepping Parish Council, one MVAS machine is currently moved between the three wards of Flackwell Heath, Loudwater and Tylers Green, but with the latest purchase now approved, each village will now have its own sign.

At the Flackwell Heath Residents’ Association meeting last week, police and traffic coordinator Ashley Hopkins said dangerous speeding remains a big concern for villagers.

He said: “The first data that we started to receive from the MVAS was very disturbing as it surely highlighted speeding problems.”

The signs cannot penalise drivers for speeding, but as well as warning people of how fast they are going, they also collect data to explain how many people speed on each road.

Campaigners are still waiting for delivery of the devices and hope to have them up and around the villages soon, Mr Hopkins said.

Five roads campaigners have decided to include on the rota for the MVAS include Chapman Lane, Northern Woods, Straight Bit and Blind Lane. Treadaway Hill is also expected to be included under the Loudwater ward.

Volunteers are also needed to help move the signs around from road to road.
