Women Institute members in Flackwell Heath have gone all out to get people involved in their national centenary celebration, by arranging to take over a Wycombe cinema screen.

The organisation’s annual general meeting will mark their 100th anniversary and with only one delegate allowed per two institutes, the villagers have arranged for all of their members to watch the events unfold on the big screen.

What first started as a small plan to allow a few of their members to watch the live streaming has grown and the group have since arranged to have 316 members watch the meeting from the comfort of Cineworld cinema, in High Wycombe.

Sue Arnautov, a member of the Flackwell Heath WI, said: “When Flackwell Evening WI heard this, and that the Bucks County Federation felt unable to be involved, they saw an opportunity.

“If they hired the smallest 'screen' at Cineworld, could they find about 200 WI members to fill it?

“With a slight gulp, they went ahead – bookings rolled in, and they upped their desired 'screen' twice.

“At last on 18 February the go-ahead came from National. A great initiative from Flackwell Heath Evening WI and especially their President, Barbara Dickinson.”

The annual general meeting will be held at the Royal Albert Hall on June 4, and the Cineworld event will run from 10am until 5pm.

The village branch of the group was formed in the 1950s and currently meets on the second Thursday of every month.
