Aggressive road rage, constant beeping of car horns and drivers cutting each other up are not parts of the Highway Code, but it is becoming commonplace on one town centre road.

The confusion of many motorists passing through High Wycombe is now spiralling into chaos, with drivers either struggling to understand or, simply, ignoring a major new road layout.

UPDATE: Council to change layout after road chaos

People travelling along Oxford Road from the town centre towards West Wycombe Road will have encountered a big change in the last month, with the left hand lane now only to be used for people turning left.

Lane discipline is key to manoeuvring through the new layout, but as our photographer quickly spotted, most people – including learner drivers – are finding it difficult.

Within minutes of standing at the roadside, chief photographer Anita Ross-Marshall captured a number of near misses and aggressive driving, last month.

The changes were signed off by council road chiefs to compensate for the new road mini-roundabout which has been built further up the road as part of the town masterplan.

The road going from Oxford Road to West Wycombe Road is now down to one lane and people travelling from the earlier traffic light junction, between the bus station and Sainsbury’s, can only go ahead from the middle lane, following the redesign.

This is the change which is causing the biggest issue, with most motorists used to going ahead from the left and middle lanes, as it was previously designed.
