The great and the good of High Wycombe turned out to an “emotional” launch of this year’s poppy appeal - the first without former president, Monty Seymour, who passed away earlier this year.

Cllr Brian Pearce, High Wycombe mayor, was joined by Wycombe District Council chairman Suzanne Brown and MP Steve Baker for the launch at Eden Shopping Centre on October 28.

The town’s poppy appeal organiser, Kevin Taylor, paid tribute to “our Monty” - the 102-year-old High Wycombe legend (pictured below) who was president of Wycombe Wanderers FC and The High Wycombe Royal British Legion before he passed away in January.

He added that the branch has had to overcome “several hurdles” this year but said the day made him feel “proud” to be part of the town.

He said: “There is so much that is good and generous and when I visit other areas in my capacity as poppy appeal organiser or RBL chairman it’s good to know that regardless of what some may say or think the reality is Wycombe people are what makes the town special.”

Mr Taylor also thanked Eden for providing them with a base for the appeal amid fears over its future and said Wycombe Wanderers “did us proud” on the day.

He said: “Every year the launch proves to be special for many reasons.”
