More than 40 police staff and residents, including an officer who talked down a teenager threatening to jump off a roof in Gerrards Cross, have been recognised for their work in a special recognition ceremony.

Supt Yvette Hitch, Chiltern and South Bucks local police area (LPA) commander, commended police officers, police staff, members of the community and volunteers in a ceremony at Taplow House Hotel last night.

PC Melissa Todd was commended for her role in safely talking down a teenager who threatened to jump of the roof of a property in Gerrards Cross.

Police were called to an address just before 5.30pm on June 2 this year and PC Todd and a colleague were first on scene.

They were met at the front door by the boy’s distressed mother, before PC Todd approached the upset boy who was sat on the ledge of the roof and began to talk to and listen to him.

PC Todd got the boy to remain calm and to eventually go back from the edge of the roof where he was brought back to safety by the Fire service.

Det Con Christopher Birtles and PC Louise Hardie were also commended for dealing with a man whose mental health was deteriorating and who posed a serious risk to various people.

Between the summer 2012 and November 2013, a man came to the attention of police following reports of harassment/stalking of a couple in Beaconsfield as well as criminal damage to two cars in Beaconsfield.

PC Hardie linked all of the offences, escalated the matter to her Inspector and a safety plan was put in place for the victims, while the man was detained under the Metal Health Act for a period of time.

The investigation was passed to Det Con Birtles in CID who investigated it further, including executing a warrant at the man’s home address.

In July 2014, the man was charged, pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking involving serious alarm or distress at Aylesbury Crown Court and was given a hospital order.

PC Will Ranford was commended for investigating offences in the Beaconsfield area, which resulted in six charges against one person.

He was involved in the arrest and charge of a person from Beaconsfield after the neighbourhood experienced an increase in burglary non dwellings earlier this year and other offences such as anti-social behaviour.

Volunteers from The Prestwood Community Speed Watch were commended for their commitment to residents and making roads safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

Paradigm Housing was also recognised for its efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour in the Chiltern and South Bucks police area.

Supt Hitch, who opened the ceremony, said: “Tonight, you will hear real stories of outstanding service, bravery, selfless acts of all kinds. The special people we will recognise are those who will not let things pass them by, or simply mind their own business. They get involved and try to make a difference for all of us.”
