Beaconsfield and Gerrards Cross are the two most expensive commuter towns in the country according to new research.

New data from property group CBRE found that after taking into account travel costs and average yearly mortgage repayments in all towns with a commuting population over 10 per cent, the most expensive commuter town is Beaconsfield.

The average cost of travel for those commuting into London is £3,788, with an average journey time of 26 minutes.

Coupled with an average house price of £1,071,534, Beaconsfield came out as the least affordable place to live in the commuter belt with a combined cost of mortgage and travel at £49,508 a year.

The findings come just months after the town was named as one of the first ‘million pound towns’ outside of London, alongside Virginia Water and Cobham in Surrey, in a study by Lloyds Bank in October.

With average house prices at £836,246 and an average travel cost per year of £3,296, nearby Gerrards Cross came in as the second most expensive town.

The combined cost of mortgage and travel for workers who live in the town is £38,984 a year.

Gerrards Cross is also likely to be more popular with commuters who prefer to spend less time travelling into work, with an average travel time of 22 minutes.

Amersham also featured in the list as the ninth most expensive in the commuter belt - average house prices in the town are £569,798, with a yearly travel cost of £3,336 and a journey time into London of 37 minutes, making the annual combined cost of mortgage repayments and travel £27,648.

At the other end of the scale, Essex and Kent hold the best value for money for commuters, with towns Tilbury and Grays coming in at the least expensive, with £3,352 in travel costs each year and average house prices at £183,658 and £190,065 respectively and Chatham, Ashford, Dartford and Gravesend also featured.
