A schoolboy who helped the 155th annual Hazlemere fete raise more than £5,000 by designing a flyer and a banner to advertise the event has been recognised with an award.

Andrew Richmond, a pupil at Holmer Green Senior School, designed a flyer to publicise the dog and classic car show as well as an eye-catching banner promoting the beer tent at the annual fete, which was held on the August Bank Holiday.

Fete publicity manager Bob Digby said: “Andrew really helped us out by designing a flyer to ask for dogs and classic cars to come to the fete, along with a spoof banner for ‘The Hazlemere Baa and Ewe’ which was promoting the beer tent.

“In addition, he won first prize in the Key Stage 3 art competition that was judged independently by Art-Seekers.com in Amersham, so it wasn’t just us that liked his work. It was a great learning opportunity to produce something for use in the real world as opposed to a class room exercise.

“This is a really good example of cross community working and shows the Hazlemere Fete is not just for Hazlemere.”

The 12-year-old designer, who spent hours working on his creations, was rewarded with a £10 Amazon voucher by Ray Cox, chairman of the fete committee, who credited Andrew for his help in making the day a success.

He said: “It is the first time we have made an award in recognition of artistic merit and although Andrew might have felt a bit ‘sheepish’ he deserved some recognition.”

Despite the rain on the day of the fete on August Bank Holiday Monday, the crowds turned out to see The Great British Bake Off star Mary Berry open the event and helped to raise around £5000 for local and national charities and organisations.

The money will help the pre-school groups in Hazlemere and Tylers Green, Hazlemere Youth Centre Judo Club, Hazlemere Community Association, Manor Farm Scouts and the Hazlemere branch of the Royal British Legion, covering Penn, Tylers Green and Hazlemere, as well as the Thames Valley Air Ambulance, and military charities Help for Heroes and the Pilgrim Bandits.
