A Holmer Green sixth-form student says she is ‘honoured’ to have won a national art competition.

Abigail Swallow, 16, a pupil at Holmer Green Senior School, created textile leaves pieces which have been chosen to feature in a magazine.

The pieces, which are currently hanging in head teacher Mike Jones’ office, has been selected to feature in Cutting Edge magazine, which is viewed by students and teachers across the UK and Ireland.

The keen artist, who worked hard to gain A* grades at GCSE, was one of a number of pupils at the school in Parish Piece, to be recognised by the exam board as one of the highest achievers in the UK after gaining 100 per cent.

She said: “I am very excited about this and feel very honoured. I am happy they liked my work as I worked extremely hard.”

The pieces are made from materials with very fine machine embroidery, inspired by the artist Jacki Cardy.

Annie Hearne, senior leader, creative curriculum at the school, said: “We are very proud of Abigail.

“She works so hard [and] is incredibly motivated. She deserves this prize, and the recognition from the examination board.”
