The M40 came to a standstill on Sunday afternoon after an escaped horse crossed the central reservation, sparking a chase to get the animal under control.

The incident just before 3pm involving a horsebox on the northbound M40 between High Wycombe and Loudwater led to the horse crossing the road.

Ambulance crews have confirmed to the BFP that there were no human casualties and one woman assessed by paramedics did not need to be taken to hospital.

Highways England reported an overturned vehicle at the spot, with the motorway closed between junction 2 and 4.

Motorists have described seeing horses loose on the road.

Reader Anthony Cox said: "I was five cars back from the accident and I tried to stop the horse but couldn't, nor the lady behind in her Mini. Hope all involved are ok."

Thames Valley Police's roads unit said firefighters, an emergency vet and police were working to minimise disruption.

Officers said a horse was injured during the incident, but fire crews say the animal is "ok".

A Bucks Fire and Rescue tweet said: "Incident was overturned horsebox carrying two horses. One was trapped, one jumped over central reservation. Both okay."

All lanes are now reopen, but traffic is queueing back to junction  5 for Stokenchurch.
