With cheap microwave meals, birthday doughnuts and the occasional stress-relieving cigarette, working in an office is not always the healthiest of lifestyles.

Yet last week Johnson & Johnson - whose UK head office is in High Wycombe - were named Britain’s Healthiest Workplace in the country’s largest wellness survey, backed up by a research team at the University of Cambridge.

And with an onsite gym for staff and free healthy snacks, the firm was found to do more than any other nationwide to help its workforce stay healthy.

The award was a joint initiative between The Sunday Telegraph, Mercer and VitalityHealth and considered factors such as such as environment, staff engagement, and company culture.

The multi-national medical devices, pharmaceutical and consumer goods manufacturer - who were also named Britain’s Healthiest Company - had global revenues in excess of £74bn in 2014 and is the largest single investor in life sciences in the UK.

Its High Wycombe site is located on Holmers Farm Way, next to the M40 motorway and employs over 500 staff.

“We are extremely proud to be named Britain’s Healthiest Company and Workplace,” said Mark Hicken, Managing Director at Janssen, the pharmaceutical company of Johnson & Johnson based in High Wycombe.

“As a leading healthcare company we aim to advance the health of people across the world, and where better to start than with our own employees.

“We have a long history of caring for the health and well-being of our workforce in the UK including the employees here at our High Wycombe site who benefit from a range of programmes, initiatives and facilities including a fitness centre, fresh fruit and flexible working.”

The company runs two different programmes to promote a healthy lifestyle: ‘Make It Count’ and ‘Energy for Performance in Life’.

The ‘Make It Count’ programme encourages people to manage, monitor and understand their blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) and cholesterol.

The ‘Energy for Performance in Life’ programme encourages employees to learn how to manage their energy levels efficiently to tackle challenges in their work and personal life.

As well as their programmes, Johnson & Johnson offers private healthcare, on-site gyms and free fresh fruit and water.

The company even produce a ‘Little Book of Wellness’ which is distributed to all UK employees across their three sites in the Thames Valley area.

As part of the awards entry, each company that participates receives a detailed report, as well as unique benchmarking information, that can be used to inform future HR strategies.

“Our work doesn’t stop here,” said HR Director, Angela Hamlin.

“We will build on the success of these awards and use the information from this survey to guide us as we continue to support our people and their families to live longer, healthier and happier lives.”

Johnson & Johnson employ approximately 126,500 people in total through over 265 operating companies across the medical devices, pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods sectors.
