The great and the good of High Wycombe will gather tomorrow to kick off this year’s Poppy Appeal, with a host of events lined up to honour and raise money for the Royal British Legion.

MP Steve Baker and High Wycombe mayor Mohammed Hanif, who is the honorary president of the town’s poppy appeal, will join servicemen and Legion members for a parade in the town centre from 10.30am.

After gathering in the Eden Centre just before 11am and marking the occasion with speeches, the party will move to Adams Park and take to the pitch at half time during Wycombe Wanderers’ match against Carlisle.

As well as collecting money before and during the game, a bugle rendition of the Last Post will be sounded during the break as the appeal launches for another year and looks to build on the generosity of residents who donated more than £48,000 last year.

Poppy Appeal organiser Kevin Taylor told the BFP: “The amount of money we raised last year was fantastic.

“We’re looking forward to a bumper fortnight – it’s the most enjoyable part of the year for me.

“We are always looking for people to help out, in any form, even if it is just for an hour every little helps.

“They can come into the shop in Eden, who have been brilliant, and Wycombe Wanderers have been marvellous as ever.

“The generosity of people in this town is marvellous, we have always raised over £40,000 which is fantastic.”

Personnel from RAF High Wycombe are among the servicemen and women joining the launch of the appeal, which will culminate at Remembrance Sunday on November 8.

This year’s Armistice Day commemorations – which remember the end of the First World War – will take place for the first time at the new war memorial in High Wycombe Cemetery, which was unveiled earlier this year.
