A jury has been sent out to reach a verdict over a homeless man accused of attempting to murder two policemen during a siege where he held his ex-girlfriend hostage.

Wayne Todd, 46, has denied attempted murder, claiming he had suffered a “breakdown” during the evening when he locked himself and his former partner in a bathroom, holding her captive during a two-and-half-hour-long siege.

The nightmare ordeal, which allegedly saw Todd hit the officers with a chisel and crowbar, only ended when police Tasered him seven times.

The trial at Reading Crown Court, which started on Tuesday, is now nearing a conclusion with judge John Reddihough sending the three men and nine women of the jury out to deliberate a verdict this morning.

Before the start of the trial, he admitted a series of crimes from the night of July 4, 2015, including making threats to kill, ABH and false imprisonment.

Todd, of no fixed abode, admitted assaulting two policemen but denied intending to attempt to murder them.

He admitted one count of affray in which he used or threatened unlawful violence towards the two policemen and admitted false imprisonment, destroying property, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm.

The trial continues and a verdict is expected to be reached on Monday morning.
