Firefighters have issued a safety warning to homeowners after tackling a bedroom blaze in High Wycombe last night.

Emergency crews from High Wycombe, Beaconsfield and Maidenhead rushed to the Underwood Road property after receiving 999 calls at about 8pm.

The fire started after a candle was left burning in a bedroom, not in a secure holder, while the residents were downstairs.

There were no smoke alarms in the home.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to put out the fire and a fan to clear the smoke.

They then carried out a safety check and fitted smoke alarms.

Crew commander Ricky Smith, from Beaconsfield Fire Station, said: “Lit candles should be placed carefully in proper holders, away from anything that can catch fire.

"Always remember to put them out when you leave the room, even for a moment.

“Even with these precautions it’s vital to be prepared should the worst happen. A working smoke alarm that is tested regularly can give you the vital time you need to get out, stay out and call 999."

Bucks Fire and Rescue has now issued a safety warning to homeowners, including tips about how to safely use candles.

Residents are being urged never to leave candles unattended, place candles in a safe place and do not move them when lit.
