A Wycombe Wanderers bar has been reopened under the name of 'Monty's' to mark the 50th anniversary of legendary town resident Monty Seymour's reign as club president.

Monty, aged 102, was named president of the club in July 1966 having served in a number of capacities from the 1950s, during the Chairboys' hey-day as the top amateur club in the south.

The ceremony at Adams Park on Friday brought together town dignitaries, including past and present mayors of High Wycombe as well as Steve Baker MP, and representatives from the Royal British Legion, club ambassadors and close friends.

Club director Ivor Beeks - who served as chairman for 25 years during Monty's tenure - formally reopened the old ‘Scores’ bar and recalled anecdotes from his first encounters with Monty, who he said "epitomises everything that is good about this club".

He added: "Who else could this bar have been named after? Monty has played a very special and important part in this club's history and I'm proud to be here today to formally unveil the new name of the bar in his honour."

Mr Beeks went on to thank the Wycombe Wanderers Ex-Players Association, who have undertaken a project throughout the summer to display more historical photos and artefacts around the bar and surrounding areas, creating a visual chronology of the club from its foundation in 1887 right through to the current day.

The display traces key moments including the FA Amateur Cup Finals of 1931 and 1957, the eight Isthmian League title wins, FA Trophy glory at Wembley under Martin O’Neill, the transformation into a successful professional side and eventual elevation to the Football League in 1993.

Monty has played a significant role in all these milestone moments, but was unable to attend the day’s event.

Monty lives at the Heights nursing home in Downley, where he has received visits from Ivor Beeks, trust chairman Trevor Stroud and manager Gareth Ainsworth in the past fortnight, and is said to look forward to seeing photos of the ceremony and of supporters enjoying use of the bar over the coming weeks and months.
