The new editor of the Bucks Free Press joined celebrations to mark International Women's Day in High Wycombe this week.

Samantha Harman, who took on the role of BFP editor on March 6, visited Wycombe Museum on Wednesday as the Women Welcome Women World Wide group celebrated the day.

The event, which was hosted by Dr Frances Alexander, marked the launch of a national project to honour 100 pioneers who changed the course of history nearly a century ago to make sure women received the vote.

The project runs until 2018 to mark the centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918, the legislation that first allowed property-owning women over 30 to vote.

The Women’s Local Government Society is chaired by Buckinghamshire County and Wycombe District councillor Lesley Clarke OBE.

She said: “Voting is taken for granted these days, but it has been hardfought, particularly for women.”
