A woman suffered serious burns when three men approached her and squirted "acid" on her in a busy town centre.

The 47-year-old woman had been sitting on a bench in Frogmoor, High Wycombe, when she was approached by three males.

One of them squirted a liquid - which could have been acid - onto her before they left the scene.

Police were called by the ambulance service at about 4.50pm today.

The woman suffered serious injuries and has been taken to hospital for treatment, where she remains.

Officers are currently at the site, carrying out an investigation into the incident, and a scenewatch has been put in place.

Firefighters were also called to the scene at around 6pm, with a crew from High Wycombe, Amersham, two from Bicester and four officers attending.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Matthew Kent, of High Wycombe Force CID, said: "This is clearly a distressing incident, in which a woman has sustained serious injuries.

"We believe that these injuries could have been caused by acid being thrown onto the victim.

"Although I understand that this incident will cause concern for people, I would like to reassure the public that we are carrying out a full and thorough investigation, and that officers are at the scene while this takes place.

"If you have any concerns, please talk to officers at the scene, or call us on the non-emergency number 101.

"I would like to appeal to anyone who has any information relating to this incident or the offenders to please call us on 101."
